Food And Drinks You Should Never Give To Your Dogs

453522_71016032Instead of treating their dogs like pets, most owners treat them like human babies — making them sleep with them on their beds, buying them special toys and treats, and even sharing their own food with them. Although it is tempting to throw table scraps to your pooch every now and then, many caution against this because human foods do not necessarily meet the nutritional needs of dogs. Furthermore, human food and drinks which may taste yummy to Fido may pose harm to them. And as a pet owner, the last thing that you want is to give food and treats that can cause sickness or poisoning. Here’s a brief list of food and drinks that you should not give your furry little pal.

  •  Grapes and currants – These fruits can damage a dog’s kidneys.
  •  Caffeinated food and drinks – Food and drinks like tea, coffee and chocolates can cause vomiting and diarrhea and can damage your dog’s circulatory and nervous system.
  • Bones – Forget about the cartoons you watched when you were young. Bones, including fish bones, can damage the digestive system of your pet.
  • Alcoholic beverages – These drinks can cause intoxication and even death among canines.
  •  Avocado – The fruit is high in persin which causes vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Mushrooms – These can cause shock and death.
  • Onions and garlic – These food ingredients contain sulfoxides and disulfides. Both chemicals can cause anemia.
  •  Raw eggs – Apart from possibly containing Salmonella, raw eggs are rich in avidin which inhibits the absorption of Vitamin B. Low levels of the vitamin can lead to poor skin and hair health.
  •  Raw meat – It may contain Salmonella and E. coli, which are destroyed during cooking. Left unchecked, this bacteria can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Xylitol – Consumption of food with this artificial sweetener can cause low blood sugar. In turn, your pet can vomit and collapse due to weakness. In some extreme cases, the pooch can suffer kidney failure.
